Hands-On LCOGT Science at the AAS Meeting!

LCOGT scientists are attending the winter 2013 meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in Long Beach, CA. In addition to several poster and oral presentations, LCOGT will be hosting a booth in the conference hall all week. Members of our supernovae, exoplanet, and solar system science teams will be there to talk about their science along with our public outreach group who will be demonstrating the cool interactive education projects available through our website.

LCOGT telescopes on sky from Chile

Two of three 1-meter LCOGT telescopes are being commissioned at our first Southern site at CTIO in Chile by Annie Hjelstrom, Vincent Posner, Kurt Vander Horst & Mark Crellin, assisted by local staff.  The LCOGT team will have the third telescope in DOME-A on-sky very soon (see the update below).

Both images taken on 10-Oct-2012 (UT) from our 1-m telescopes in DOME-C and DOME-B respectively.

Science Day at the Santa Barbara Zoo 2012

Saturday, October 6th, was the 4th annual Science Day at the Santa Barbara Zoo. There were several booths set up around the zoo by zoo staff, volunteers, and community partners. Excited learners of all ages spent the day learning about the world around them through hands-on activities covering a wide range of science, including an astronomy booth from LCOGT.

May and June Star Parties

The month of May (and through the beginning of June) was quite busy for star parties. There were four held at Sedgwick and one at Photon Ranch (up in the hills above Santa Barbara). Thank you to everyone who helped plan and attended these events. All the events turned out fantastic even those that didn't quite have cooperating weather or equipment.

AstroDay 2012

May 5th saw the 11th annual AstroDay celebration on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Observatories across the state were invited to participate in the event located at Prince Kuhio shopping center in Hilo, including LCOGT. JD Armstrong and Rachel Ross attended along with Heather Kaluna and Marco Micheli, grad students from University of Hawai'i Manoa.
