How to Download DS9 for Windows Users

These instructions will take you through the steps of downloading and starting DS9.

From the DS9 Website, click on the Windows Vista/2000/NT link.

You will then get a dialog box saying that you have chosen to open ds9.windows.5.4.exe. Choose Save File

The .exe file will normally download to your desktop (unless your browser's preferences are set differently, in which case it will go to where they are set to). You will see a dialog box and you can click Open from there, or close the dialog box and open the .exe file from your desktop.

You may then get a dialog box warning you that you are about to launch and executable file. Click OK.

You will then get a dialog box telling you the destination the file is going to unzip to. This will normally be C:ProgramFilesds9. You can change the destination if you wish or just click Unzip.

[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_preview","fid":"357","attributes":{"alt":"Box3","class":"media-image medium imagecache","style":"float: none; height: 100px; width: 100px;","typeof":"foaf:Image"}}]]

You will then get a box that says two files have been unzipped successfully. Click OK.

[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_preview","fid":"359","attributes":{"alt":"Box5","class":"media-image medium imagecache","style":"float: none; height: 100px; width: 100px;","typeof":"foaf:Image"}}]]

You can now close any dialog boxes that are still open.

Next, from your desktop go to My Computer. Find your C drive and double click. Open the Program Files folder. (You may get a warning at this point about opening the folder. Open it anyway if this happens.) There should be a folder called ds9. When you open it you will see 2 files: one is the DS9 program with a sun icon, and the other is a .dll file.

To create a shortcut so you can get to DS9 easily from your desktop next time, right click on the sun icon and choose Create Shortcut. A shortcut icon will appear in the folder. Drag it to your desktop.

To open DS9, double click on the shortcut you have made.
