Postdoctoral position in time-variable astronomy

The University of California, Santa Barbara and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGTLas Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network) seek a postdoctoral scientist with skills in observational visible or NIR astronomy. We welcome applications from specialists in any area of time variable astronomy, but especially those with expertise in extragalactic transients such as supernovae or gamma-ray bursts. The successful candidate will have access to our growing network of robotic telescopes, and may choose to become involved in existing research projects such as the Palomar Transient Factory, the Supernova Legacy Survey, or Pan-STARRS. Additionally he or she will contribute to the overall mission of the observatory — the establishment of a worldwide network of robotic telescopes specializing in time domain astronomy. The postdoc will be affiliated with and have offices at both UCSB and LCOGT and have access to the observing resources of both institutions. They will also benefit from proximity to the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. A Ph.D. in astronomy or a related discipline is required. The term of this position is 2 years, with possible extension for a third year.

LCOGT is a privately funded observatory which now operates the two 2 meter Faulkes Telescopes, one at Haleakala, Hawaii, and the other at Siding Spring, Australia. Within five years LCOGT will have a longitudinally spaced ring of 1m and 0.4m telescopes capable of robotic around-the-clock observations.

Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, and research statement, and should arrange to have three letters of reference sent to the above address. Electronic PDF submissions preferred. Applications complete by December 31, 2009 will receive full consideration. LCOGT and UCSB are equal opportunity employers.
