M27: Dumbbell nebula

Download original

Description

First observed in 1764, M27 was the first planetary nebula to be discovered, and is certainly one of the most impressive displays of its kind in the sky.

The bright proportion is expanding at a rate of 6.8 arc minutes per century which leads to an estimated age of 3000-4000 years.

This is a 2x2 image mosaic and was taken in Hydrogen-Alpha and Oxygen-III filters using Faulkes Telescope North.
