Postdoctoral Position in Time Variable Astronomy

Deadline:
Fri, 11/12/2010 (All day) to Fri, 12/31/2010 (All day)
Discipline:
Country:

The University of California, Santa Barbara and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) seek a postdoctoral scientist with skills in observational visible or NIR astronomy. We welcome applications from specialists in any area of time variable astronomy. Current areas of concentration include the study of extrasolar planets and extragalactic transients such as supernovae or gamma-ray bursts. LCOGT is a member of several research projects, including the Palomar Transient Factory, Pan-STARRS1, and LSST. Individual LCOGT members are involved in many other collaborations including Kepler, WASP, HATNet, CoRoT, Robonet, SDSS-II SN Survey, the Supernova Legacy Survey, and the LaSilla-QUEST SN search. The successful candidate will contribute to the overall mission of the observatory --the establishment of a worldwide network of robotic telescopes specializing in time domain astronomy. The postdoc will be affiliated with and have offices at both UCSB and LCOGT and have access to the observing resources of both institutions. They will also benefit from proximity to the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. A Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related discipline is required. The term of this position is 2 years, with possible extension for a third year.

LCOGT is a privately funded observatory which now operates the two 2 meter Faulkes Telescopes, one at Haleakala, Hawaii, and the other at Siding Spring, Australia. Within five years LCOGT will have a longitudinally spaced ring of 1m and 0.4m telescopes capable of robotic around-the-clock observations.

Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, and research statement, and should arrange to have three letters of reference sent to the above address. Electronic PDF submissions preferred. Applications complete by December 31, 2010 will receive full consideration. The Department of Physics and LCOGT are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research. LCOGT and UCSB are equal opportunity employers.

The closing date for receipt of applications: 12/31/2010

Included Benefits:

This position will be an employee of UCSB and thus receive the UCSB benefit package for Postdoctoral Scholars. For further information, go to http://hr.ucsb.edu/benefits/postdoc.php and reference Title Code 3252.
